Police arrest 50 drivers over unapproved vehicle lights on Kasoa-Winneba Highway

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Central East Regional Police Command has apprehended 50 drivers for employing unapproved lighting systems on their vehicles, with 37 of them facing prosecution. This enforcement operation was carried out along the Kasoa-Winneba Highway after a prolonged period of public education and warnings by the police about the use of unauthorized vehicle lights.

The focus was on motorists utilizing LED fog lights, strobe lights, and sirens without the necessary statutory authorization. The police revealed that such practices violate the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, L.I. 2180, which strictly prohibits the attachment and usage of unapproved lights on vehicles. Consequently, 50 drivers have been arrested, with 37 cases proceeding to the Akweley Magistrate Court in Kasoa.

On Friday, 28 offenders appeared before the court, with 16 fined, three cautioned, and the rest still pending. On Monday, 18 more offenders faced the court, with 16 also fined, and two failing to appear, leaving their cases unsettled. The police vowed to continue the enforcement drive until road safety is restored. They cautioned motorists to eliminate unauthorized lighting systems from their vehicles or face arrest and prosecution.
