Passenger Pushed To Death From Local Train After Seating Dispute

In the early afternoon of August 20, a tragic event unfolded aboard a Mumbai local train, as per police reports from the Bandra Government Railway Police (GRP). According to the police, the incident transpired between Mahim and Bandra stations on a disabled compartment of a Churchgate-Borivali slow local train. The deceased, identified as 62-year-old Cajetan Denis Peris, was a person with disabilities residing in Santacruz.

Police have yet to confirm Peris's exact place of residence, as he had been living with his sister's family for about six months before becoming a pavement dweller.

Peris, who lost one leg in a plumbing accident years ago, was boarding the train at Mahim station when the conflict began with Amajad Safriddin Shaikh, a 48-year-old pavement dweller reportedly staying near a dargah in Churchgate East. The argument reportedly stemmed from seating arrangements in the disabled compartment, where Peris objected to Shaikh, who was able-bodied, occupying the reserved space. An argument ensued, escalating to violence when Shaikh allegedly pushed Peris out of the moving train near Bandra Creek.

Upon arrival at the scene, RPF personnel found Peris seriously injured and unconscious on the tracks. He was immediately rushed to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra West, but despite treatment, doctors pronounced him dead at 15:05 hours. The accused, Shaikh, was taken into custody by GRP and booked for murder. A police inspector stated that Peris had boarded the train at Mahim, while Shaikh was already present in the compartment.

The incident has reignited concerns over passenger safety on Mumbai's suburban railway network, particularly the treatment of persons with disabilities in reserved coaches. Activist Samir Zaveri, who is himself 90 percent disabled due to a railway accident, expressed deep concern over able-bodied passengers encroaching upon these reserved compartments, leading to dangerous situations and assaults on vulnerable passengers.

Authorities have filed a chargesheet in the case, and GRP officers will present the accused in court the following day.
