National fisheries policy being prepared to unlock $10bn potential: minister

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhary announced on Thursday that the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy is being developed to unlock the sector's potential, which could reach $10 billion. Speaking during a meeting to review the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and its departments' performance, he emphasized the need for simplified procedures to improve ease of doing business in the maritime sector.

Chaudhary directed the ministry and its attached departments to incorporate stakeholder views and recommendations into policies and initiatives.

The meeting was informed that a one-window operation, similar to Khidmat Centres, has been completed. This facility will provide multiple government services to the business community through a single platform, reducing procedural delays and improving access for investors and maritime-sector businesses. Chaudhary also highlighted the construction of a 100-acre off-dock terminal at Gwadar Port, which will enhance trade with Central Asian Republics (CARs) and improve logistics connectivity.

The terminal is expected to boost cargo handling and strengthen regional links, further solidifying Gwadar's position as a gateway for trade with landlocked Central Asian countries.

Additionally, a $3 million Global Environment Facility (GEF)-supported project for marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems protection was discussed. The project aims to promote environmentally sustainable fishing practices while emphasizing that economic development in the maritime sector must be balanced with environmental protection, particularly the conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems.

The minister stressed the importance of utilizing recovered port land for productive purposes, which could generate additional economic resources and contribute to the development of the country's blue economy. The meeting reviewed progress on various ongoing initiatives and projects, and Chaudhary directed relevant authorities to ensure their timely completion and enhance coordination among stakeholders.
