MP Ngogoyo urges NCIC to act early on political rhetoric to prevent unrest

Kajiado North Member of Parliament Ngogoyo has called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to swiftly address early signs of political unrest. He warned that unchecked inflammatory rhetoric could trigger violence. The NCIC is currently investigating statements from political figures, including Rigathi Gachagua, Paul Otuoma, and Peter Kaluma.

Gachagua and Otuoma have been summoned to appear before the commission, with Gachagua due to testify on August 27 and Otuoma on August 21. Kaluma was summoned for August 28, citing prior engagements.

Ngogoyo emphasized the importance of early warning systems in monitoring potential threats before they escalate into violence. He referred to Kenya's past political crises, such as the 2007 post-election violence, which resulted in hundreds of deaths and displacement. The MP also questioned the NCIC's consistency in enforcing its mandate, particularly regarding hate speech and inflammatory statements.

He defended the NCIC Act's legal framework, stating that the commission has the authority to pursue such cases and forward them to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Ngogoyo criticized Kaluma for making statements predicting unrest before the August 16 rally in Homa Bay. He urged political leaders to be held accountable for their rhetoric, regardless of party affiliation, and warned that violence could quickly overshadow political differences. The MP also expressed concern over increasing ethnic mobilization by political actors, describing Kenya as becoming increasingly tribal.

Despite the intensified political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election, Ngogoyo emphasized the need for prevention over reactive measures, urging Kenyans to challenge divisive rhetoric.
