The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MOFFA) in Ghana is set to implement a district-level monitoring system to address concerns over the disrespectful handling of corpses during funeral ceremonies. This move follows recent reports highlighting instances where mourners have been seen recklessly tossing and dropping coffins during celebrations, as well as other acts deemed undignified by many. The agency aims to ensure that corpses are treated with the respect they deserve throughout the funeral process.
According to Francis Ennin, Executive Director of MOFFA, the agency plans to deploy personnel to every district across the nation. These personnel will be equipped with mobile phones and motorbikes to quickly respond to funeral activities and document any suspected cases of abuse. Ennin emphasized that the presence of MOFFA personnel will deter misconduct, allowing them to capture evidence through photographs and videos.
The agency has already begun by establishing regional offices, with the intention of expanding the deployment to all districts once the personnel are hired and ready to serve.
