MOE studies co-curricular merit for students at prison institutions for university admission
KAJANG: The Education Ministry (MOE) will look into awarding merit for participation in co-curricular activities, including sports, by students at prison institutions for consideration in university admission.
The Education Ministry (MOE) is exploring the possibility of awarding merit to students at prison institutions for their participation in co-curricular activities, such as sports, in order to consider them during university admissions. This move comes as Minister Fadhlina Sidek emphasized the importance of giving these students a chance to pursue higher education after completing their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams and leaving the prison institutions.
The merit students earn through co-curricular activities could be a factor in their transition to the next level of education, the minister said during the 17th Hijrah Kasih Programme organized by MOE in collaboration with the Malaysian Prison Department.
The ministry will also investigate the potential for awarding skills certificates to students who undergo skills training while at prison institutions, covering areas such as sewing and food preparation. These certificates would be beneficial for the students upon their return to society. Fadhlina highlighted that students in prisons have achieved a perfect 100% pass rate in the SPM for two consecutive years, showing that their circumstances do not hinder their ability to succeed in education, regardless of their location or school they attend.
The minister stressed that success among these students stems from their determination, and the ministry is looking into ways to ensure they keep up with global educational developments, including digital learning opportunities.
Deputy Director-General of Education (School Operations Sector) Datuk Zainal Abas revealed that the ministry aims to have PAJSK scores for students at prison schools recognized by the 2027 SPM examination, allowing these candidates to receive a 10% merit boost when applying for university admission. Recognizing PAJSK scores is crucial as athletic and co-curricular achievements can improve students' merit when applying to further their education.
The MOE is also working on providing access to the DELIMa (Digital Educational Learning Initiative Malaysia) platform for teachers at integrity schools and Henry Gurney schools nationwide, as well as controlled access for students in prison institutions. This move would enable them to participate in online learning and access digital educational materials, ensuring they have the same learning facilities as other students.
