Mental Health Authority takes steps to shut down illegal Kumasi spiritual centre housing 2,000 patients

The Mental Health Authority has initiated measures to shut down a spiritual healing centre in Kumasi housing over 2,000 individuals with mental health issues. Dr. Eugene Kobla Dordoye, the Chief Executive of the Mental Health Authority, revealed that some residents at the facility consider the centre's leader to be their spiritual healer.

The centre had previously held a valid license, but it has since lapsed, causing concern regarding its continued operation. Dr. Dordoye expressed alarm over reports of substandard conditions at the centre, citing allegations of individuals with mental health issues being restrained. He questioned the ability of healthcare professionals to effectively diagnose and manage such cases when patients are physically restrained.

At the 5th Graduation Ceremony of the Ghana Christian University College, Dr. Dordoye cautioned the public against administering medication to those with mental health conditions without proper medical supervision. He urged families and the general public to seek appropriate healthcare services for individuals experiencing mental health challenges, warning against practices that could jeopardize their health or well-being.

The situation highlights the potential dangers of mental health treatment in some spiritual healing settings, where individuals might be subjected to restrictive practices rather than receiving proper medical and psychosocial care. In response, the Mental Health Authority is advocating for strict compliance with established care standards and the safeguarding of the dignity, safety, and rights of people living with mental health conditions.
