Kyrgios suspended after positive cocaine test

Nick Kyrgios, the former world number 13, has been provisionally suspended from tennis following a positive cocaine test. The Australian submitted a sample during the Mallorca Open on June 22, which later tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. The International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed Kyrgios's suspension as of August 4.

Kyrgios announced on Instagram that he made "a huge mistake" and takes full responsibility for his actions. Under the suspension, Kyrgios is barred from playing, coaching, or attending any Grand Slam or sanctioned events until the tribunal outcome. He faces a potential ban of up to four years, though if he can prove the drug was taken outside of a competition, the maximum ban would be three months.

The 31-year-old has played only four singles matches this season due to recurring knee and wrist injuries. In his Instagram statement, Kyrgios admitted that the injuries had taken a toll on him mentally and physically, noting that coming to terms with being near the end of his career has been more challenging than he anticipated.

He vowed to step away from social media and public life for 28 days to focus on his recovery. Cocaine is listed as a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency, and reduced sanctions apply for athletes caught using it outside of competition.
