Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has lent his support to a new initiative, Race for Mobility, which aims to raise KSh100 million for pediatric wheelchairs for children with disabilities. The campaign, spearheaded by Michael Panther, founder of Hope Mobility Kenya, will see Panther compete in the 2026 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon on October 25, becoming the first Person Living With Disabilities (PWD) to participate in this category of the race.
Kipchoge praised Panther's dedication, noting the significance of a PWD taking on such a challenging event to help improve the lives of children and their families. Panther is racing in a specially designed professional racing wheelchair, "the Red Ferrari," to raise funds for the purchase of at least 200 custom-fitted pediatric wheelchairs.
These wheelchairs will be created in line with the World Health Organisation's eight-step wheelchair service process, ensuring each child receives a safe and appropriate wheelchair. Currently, Kenya lacks around 550,000 wheelchairs and assistive devices, with 200,000 needed for children. Each wheelchair costs approximately KSh50,000, with Panther seeking individual donations of Ksh1,000 per kilometre and corporate sponsorships through M-Pesa.
