Jets Make Starting QB Decision for Steelers Preseason Game: Report

Geno Smith will take the starting quarterback position for the New York Jets in their preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to reports. Smith did not play in the Jets' opening preseason match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week due to ankle discomfort. During that game, Brady Cook, Bailey Zappe, and Cade Klubnik shared quarterback responsibilities.

Cook completed nine of his 15 passes for 108 yards, while Zappe had a 6/10 completion rate with two interceptions, and Klubnik contributed 56 yards through 5/7 passes.

Connor Hughes of SNY reported on Thursday that Smith will be the starter for Friday night's game. The Jets signed Smith in a trade with the Raiders in March, bringing him back to the team where he spent the first four seasons of his NFL career. Smith has reportedly faced challenges early in training camp this year. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn acknowledged Smith's injury, stating, "I think any player at this point knows that something is going to hurt at some point.

He’s a competitor and he wants to make sure he gets those reps in. The thing is that we want to be smart too about how we go about doing things when it comes to him and any of our players." The Jets-Steelers preseason matchup is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
