iOS 27 breaks 15 years of muscle memory on iPhone and iPad

Since the debut of iOS 5 back in 2011, the iPhone and iPad have featured Notification Center, a hub for alerts from various apps, presented in a chronological sequence. However, with the upcoming iOS 27, Apple is set to implement a significant alteration in the manner users access Notification Center on iPhone and iPad. The changes have been observed in the beta versions of iOS 27, with the alterations expected to be implemented this fall.

Despite minor variations between the initial two beta releases, the default behavior remains unchanged for both devices. Nevertheless, enabling Siri AI brings about a change in a critical swipe gesture on both iPhone and iPad. One of the numerous methods to invoke Siri AI, once enabled, involves swiping down from the center of the top edge of the iPhone or iPad display.

Of note is that this action, previously opening Notification Center, will now open Siri AI instead. Users can still access Notification Center by swiping down from the top-left corner, regardless of Siri AI being enabled. In the new iOS 27, alerts now animate into existence from the top left corner, guiding users towards Notification Center's more compact layout.

Apple is placing a strong emphasis on Siri AI accessibility in iOS 27, dedicating a significant portion of the top edge to this new experience. The last time Apple modified the method of accessing Notification Center was when Control Center migrated from a swipe-up gesture from the bottom to a swipe down gesture from the top-right corner on iPhone X. Apple subsequently unified this experience across all devices.

However, with Notification Center's move to the corner, the stage is set for another transformation. Particularly in iPadOS 27 beta 1, the area above the Home screen app icons was largely reserved for Siri AI invocation. The area designated for opening Notification Center shrank if AM/PM or the date was not displayed. Apple addressed this with iPadOS 27 beta 2, creating a more balanced distribution across both sides.

Roughly the size of two app columns, this region houses Notification Center on the left and Control Center on the right, with the remainder reserved for Siri invocation. After 15 years of ingrained muscle memory, the extent to which this change is beneficial or merits reconsideration remains to be seen. Early feedback, however, appears overwhelmingly positive regarding Apple's new Siri AI system.

While the new behavior may take some time to get accustomed to, the potential for Siri to function more effectively is certainly welcome news. Despite the lack of an option to disable Siri invocation from the top middle swipe down, adapting to the new muscle memory will be necessary. Currently available as a developer and public beta, iOS 27 is slated for official release next month.
