INEC promises better elections in 2027 after Osun poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged to enhance its election conduct for the 2027 general elections following the commendations received for the successful outcome of the Osun State governorship poll. Speaking on Thursday, Mohammed Haruna, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, assured a delegation comprising political parties, civil society organizations, community leaders, youth groups, women leaders and other democratic stakeholders of INEC's commitment to free, fair and credible elections.

Haruna emphasized that INEC is dedicated to improving its performance and building on the Osun experience ahead of the 2027 general elections. The delegation, led by its convener Obed Agu, had earlier visited INEC's headquarters in Abuja to express their appreciation for the commission's conduct of the August 15 Osun governorship election.

During a two-day National Post-Election Discourse, the group reviewed various aspects of the election, including pre-election preparations, election-day conduct, security arrangements, results management and stakeholder engagement. They lauded INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan for his institutional independence, engagement with political parties, and adherence to electoral timelines.

The delegation expressed confidence in INEC's ability to maintain and improve upon the standard set during the Osun election, where voter turnout exceeded 40 per cent and results were updated in real-time. The delegation urged INEC to ensure equal treatment of voters and political parties while preserving its independence and transparency.

They also acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu and security agencies in providing a conducive environment for the Osun election.
