Ikea’s new art collection is perfect for more-is-more postmodernists

Ikea has launched its latest art collection, Konstrunda, featuring seven limited-edition pieces from contemporary artists. The collection aims to inject color, abstract patterns, and irregular forms into homes that might otherwise be filled with beige, boring, or neutral decor. Available online now, the 22-piece collection is characterized by minimalist, geometric, and graphic designs.

Notable works include a lacquered black and green sculpture by Lisa Reiser, a black-and-white rug and vases by Emanuele Stamuli, and block stack guardian angel figurine by Akanksha Deo, among others. Designed by in-house Ikea designer Andu Masebo, the collection offers a mix of functionality and visual interest, with items like a chrome-framed glass side table in metallic and bright blue finishes.

Presented in an art gallery-like setting, the limited availability adds a sense of exclusivity to the pieces. Ikea's creative leader, Karin Gustavsson, emphasized that art should be accessible, not a luxury, and hopes the collection will evoke emotion and spark conversation. This model of limited-edition, curated collections from outside artists aligns with a growing trend, as seen in Hem's Hem X partnership in 2022.

With a history of limited collections featuring artists like Virgil Abloh, Gustaf Westman, and surrealism-inspired designs, Ikea uses this approach to provide artists with a platform and offer consumers affordable, reflective home decor. By focusing on contemporary artists and designers, Ikea aims to elevate talent while showcasing its unique taste and avant-garde sensibilities.
