Himanta Biswa Sarma meets PM Modi in Delhi; discusses Assam floods, rehabilitation

Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to discuss the state's recent devastating floods and the ongoing rehabilitation efforts. The meeting took place on Thursday and focused on the next phase of the flood response, which affected four districts: Sibsagar, Charaideo, Golaghat and Jorhat. The floods, which occurred last month, resulted in the loss of 105 lives and the uprooting of thousands of families.

During the discussions, Sarma outlined the plans for rebuilding affected areas, restoring livelihoods and ensuring comprehensive recovery. He conveyed the Assam government's constant communication with the Prime Minister throughout the #AssamFloodResponse, highlighting Modi's close review of the situation and his assistance. The floods have damaged over 20,000 houses and claimed more than 600,000 domestic animals, with the final damage assessment ongoing.

Modi reiterated the Government of India's unwavering support for the recovery mission and its commitment to realizing Viksit Assam, as the Chief Minister described it. Sarma also provided an overview of the key initiatives undertaken by the Assam government during its first 100 days in office to fulfill the mandate entrusted to it by the people of the state.

These initiatives covered the state's broader development priorities, such as accelerating growth, strengthening infrastructure, improving public service delivery and creating greater opportunities for the people of Assam.

Both leaders expressed gratitude to one another, with Sarma particularly appreciative of Modi's continued margdarshan (guidance) and steadfast commitment to the shared vision of a Viksit Assam. The meeting underscored the close coordination between the Centre and the Assam government in addressing the flood situation and advancing the state's development agenda.
