Harbourfront central to new DAB push for connection

The DAB has announced a new harbour connect group formed to enhance the Victoria Harbour waterfront environment, boost the local economy, and improve residents' quality of life. Convenor Vincent Cheng stated that the group aims to promote the city's waterfront attractions, such as the West Kowloon Cultural Centre and Kai Tak Sports Park, to encourage more citizens to utilize these world-class facilities.

The group will collaborate with the Tourism Board to implement promotional efforts to bolster the city's international tourism appeal.

Legislator Jody Kwok, another convenor, addressed the ongoing issue of harbour water quality, which has negatively impacted the well-being of residents in areas like Tsuen Wan, Cheung Sha Wan, and Hung Hom. The group seeks the government to monitor water quality, regularly publish data, and address the root cause of the problem – sewage pipe misconnections. Kwok highlighted that seawater quality is crucial for enhancing waterfront conditions.

Additionally, the group will focus on improving harbourfront connectivity in six districts: Hong Kong Island East and West, Central and West Kowloon, and New Territories South West. Cheng mentioned that while already more than 80 percent of the harbourside is connected, some areas lack connectivity, and the group will identify reasons and potential solutions for these gaps.

The group is also organizing a harbour promenade tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Special Administrative Region and promote economic vitality along the waterfront.
