GRIDCo begins restoration after major fault disrupts power supply

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has initiated the restoration of power to various regions across the nation following a significant fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line. The fault transpired at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026, causing power interruptions in certain parts of the country.

In a statement, GRIDCo clarified that the fault led to the automatic shutdown of some generating units at the Akosombo power plant and several thermal power plants. The company attributed the shutdown to the power system's protective mechanisms designed to avert further damage and sustain the stability of the national power network.

GRIDCo's engineers, collaborating with other entities within the power sector, swiftly isolated the affected transmission line and commenced the restoration process. The company reported that power has already been restored to some of the impacted areas, while ongoing efforts are dedicated to reestablishing supply to all remaining consumers. "Our restoration efforts are advancing steadily to guarantee that power is reestablished to all remaining affected customers as swiftly and securely as possible," GRIDCo stated.

The company extended its apologies to the public for the temporary disruption and assured customers that all pertinent technical teams have been activated and are actively working towards a full restoration of the power system. GRIDCo pledged to provide updates as additional information becomes available and appealed to the public for patience and cooperation during the ongoing restoration exercise.
