Google unveils 12-month free AI offer for Nigerian students

Google has introduced a new program offering Nigerian university, polytechnic, and college of education students 12 months of free access to Google AI Plus. This initiative, called the Gemini Student Offer, is valued at approximately $220 and is available to individuals aged 18 and above enrolled in accredited higher education institutions across Nigeria.

The subscription provides access to advanced AI tools, including higher usage limits, real-time voice conversations, academic research features, and unlimited file uploads.

Nigeria is one of 27 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa where this initiative has been launched. Olumide Balogun, Google's Director for West and East Africa, emphasized the company's commitment to making AI-powered learning accessible to students by removing financial barriers. According to Balogun, AI represents a significant technological shift, and with Nigeria's young and entrepreneurial population, students can leverage these tools to excel in their studies and compete globally.

The free Google AI Plus subscription aims to support learning, not academic dishonesty. Google's Guided Learning mode functions as a tutor, providing hints and guiding questions rather than direct answers to academic tasks. In a Google DeepMind study involving 1,763 students in West African schools, participants using Guided Learning demonstrated learning gains equivalent to between 1.2 and 1.7 years within eight weeks.

Over 90 percent of interactions focused on understanding concepts, with only two percent resulting in direct solutions.

The free subscription also includes study tools such as Gemini Study Notebooks, which convert lecture notes into quizzes and lesson plans, Gemini Live for brainstorming and research, interactive 3D visualizations, and Google Lens Homework Helper for solving equations and interpreting diagrams. Eligible students can verify their enrollment through SheerID and claim their free subscription via Google's student offer portal.
