Google Goes Back to School With New AI Study Tools

As back-to-school season approaches, Google is entering the academic arena with a new AI study tool hub designed to assist students. Announced on Wednesday, the dedicated student hub is expected to be accessible within Google's Gemini AI assistant and Google Search. The hub offers a range of tools, including a study notebook, customized flashcards, and practice quizzes, to aid in research and assignments.

Students can utilize Gemini to delve into a research topic, and the tool will compile the information in the background, allowing students to switch between tasks. When the report is completed, Gemini will send a notification and be ready for a Q&A session to help students better understand their findings. Additionally, students can engage in conversational discussions with Google Live regarding multi-step research papers to gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Gemini also provides AI-generated 3D simulations, tables, and grids, created after the student enters a specific prompt. For instance, a student writing a paper on DNA could enter a prompt like "Show me how DNA works in 3D" and receive interactive visuals for exploring a DNA model. Google Search enables students to generate simulations for better comprehension of complex topics. For example, science students can search for "pH scale" and view visual results in an interactive AI overview.

Customized quizzes can be created through Google Search for various subjects, such as science, math, and foreign languages. Students can enter prompts related to these subjects, and the platform will generate a quiz based on the prompt. For example, a student preparing for the SAT could ask, "Create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocabulary words to help me prep for the SATs," and the quiz would be generated accordingly.

Students can upload various file types, like PDFs, images, and docs, to Google Search, which can then create study documents to keep information organized and easily accessible. These documents can consolidate notes, ideas from class, and feedback from lectures into one-page reports that clearly outline the key points.

In a bid to support college students in the US, Google is offering a free year of Google AI Pro, typically costing $20 per month. This plan includes four times higher usage limits in Gemini, access to Gemini Spark, Gemini features in apps such as Google Docs and Gmail, Google Health Premium, and 5TB of storage. Additionally, Google is bundling Google AI Pro with YouTube Premium for up to 70% off.

The announcement of these new AI study tools comes just a day after OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens, a version focused on younger students' education. As more AI companies enter the education market, Google's expansion into AI-powered learning may significantly impact the space. However, the growing use of AI in education has raised concerns about distinguishing study help from cheating.

For instance, Princeton University recently began proctoring exams due to worries about AI-related cheating, with many schools implementing AI detection tools and strict rules on AI use.
