Food safety violations found at hotels and canteens in railway stations across Karnataka

The inspections were carried out with a focus on food quality, storage, labelling and hygiene practices

Food safety violations found at hotels and canteens in railway stations across Karnataka

A comprehensive food safety inspection at railway stations in Karnataka has uncovered numerous violations across hotels, canteens, and other food establishments. The investigation, carried out by the Food Safety Division of the Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department, inspected 112 hotels, canteens, and food establishments in 36 railway stations.

Findings included improper storage and handling of food, such as samosas stored in cardboard boxes and vadas placed on newspapers. Chutney was stored in plastic buckets unsuitable for food use, and some establishments used newspapers to pack food served to customers. Inspectors also discovered food items without mandatory labelling details, like packets of savories, and the absence of food business registration certificates in some venues.

Suspicions arose about the use of unapproved food colours, with yellow coloring found in jalebi and pink coloring in khoa peda. Expired products, like Nandini curd and Dodla standardised milk, were also discovered at a station in Haveri district. At Mysuru Railway Station, idlis were reportedly prepared using plastic materials on food preparation units.

Chapati packets lacking required labelling were also on sale. Fungal growth was observed on various vegetables and onions. An unhygienic establishment was found at K.R. Puram Railway Station, and expired food products were detected at multiple locations.

The department has informed railway authorities and designated officers about these violations, with further legal action expected.
