Deadly overnight storms batter Germany, killing a woman and injuring at least 2

A woman tragically lost her life and two others sustained injuries after severe storms swept across parts of Germany overnight. In Waldorf, Rhineland-Palatinate, a 58-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on a sheltered seating area where she and a 47-year-old woman were seeking refuge. The 58-year-old victim died at the scene, while the 47-year-old was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The incident occurred when the women, walking together, sought shelter from the storm. A tornado struck Fürstenwalde, causing extensive damage including torn-off roofs, damaged vehicles, and one injured person. In Höhr-Grenzhausen, strong winds tore walls from buildings, affecting at least two homes, while a widespread power outage occurred and several trees were uprooted.

Strong winds also overturned a truck on the A61 highway, causing additional damage. Numerous weather-related emergency calls were received in Hesse, Thuringia, and Bavaria. A village festival in Kronach, Bavaria, was partially evacuated as about 3,500 guests were forced to leave the outdoor area due to the severe storms, though they were able to continue celebrating indoors.

In Wetzlar, Hesse, the storm damaged approximately 60 houses, with roofing pieces being blown up to 100 meters away. The German Weather Service warned of potential further severe storms later in the day, particularly in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.
