Dangerous motorway driving akin to attempted murder - MEP

Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher has described driving on the wrong side of a motorway as akin to attempted murder. He believes the current legal framework for handling such willfully negligent driving is inadequate and calls for legislative changes to reflect the gravity of these crimes. Kelleher argues that merely applying penalty points to drivers' licenses, many of whom lack them, is ineffective.

Instead, he asserts that such offenses should result in a custodial sentence. A vigil was held in Carlow to support three women and a boy who were injured in a motorway collision last weekend. Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke expressed his sympathy for the affected family, calling the incident a "heinous crime" and emphasizing the need for improved support and training for law enforcement.
