CRPF’s big suicide prevention move after 59 deaths in ranks last year

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has formed a high-level core group to address the alarming rise in suicides among its ranks, following 59 such deaths reported in 2025. The decision came after senior officers discussed the need for a structured mechanism to examine these incidents, identify risk factors, and improve support systems.

Last year, 57 CRPF personnel took their own lives, compared to 43 in 2022, 57 in 2023, 46 in 2024, and 46 deaths reported till May 30 of the current year. The core group, headed by CRPF Director General GP Singh, will meet monthly, preferably in the third week, to review self-harm cases. Each case will be examined for causes, welfare support availability, preventive measures taken, and systemic issues requiring intervention.

Presentations, including background information, circumstances leading to the incident, actions taken, welfare and medical interventions, preliminary inquiry findings, and preventive measures, will be delivered via video conference. The supervisory operational head of the unit, including DIG, IG, ADG or SDG, will join the review through video conference.

The core group aims to ensure continuous monitoring, timely intervention, accountability, and strengthening of preventive steps to reduce self-harm among CRPF personnel.
