Court orders firm, agency to clean up Delta oil spill

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has mandated Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency to begin cleaning up an oil spill that has severely impacted Uzere Kingdom in Delta State's Isoko South Local Government Area. The ruling, issued on Thursday, emphasized the urgency of environmental protection and adherence to legal procedures.

Uzere Kingdom, a historic oil-producing region with two major oil fields, is home to around 43 wells producing approximately 53,000 barrels of oil daily. The judge ordered the defendants to cease all oil and gas operations in the area until the dispute is resolved. The defendants, represented by counsel N.O. Akporuvweku, confirmed they had received the motion and noted productive discussions with the plaintiff.

Justice Adamu Mohammed directed the defendants to submit an interim compliance report to the court within 14 days, an extension from the initially proposed seven days. The court's decision was welcomed by Uzere residents, who have endured environmental and economic consequences of the oil spill for years. The ruling is seen as a significant victory for the Kingdom and a crucial step in protecting the community's well-being.
