Colombia’s Congress Prepares to Elect Judges of the National Electoral Council

The Congress of the Republic will elect the nine magistrates of Colombia's National Electoral Council (CNE) next Tuesday, August 25. The CNE is part of Colombia's Electoral Organization alongside the National Civil Registry. In recent presidential elections, tensions arose due to accusations about the CNE's actions and data by then-President Gustavo Petro.

The CNE consists of nine magistrates elected by Congress for four-year terms. It is responsible for promoting democratic sustainability through efficient and timely mechanisms to oversee electoral activities and protect opposition rights. The body faced scrutiny in recent months for sanctioning politicians involved in spending violations and prohibited financing.

Of the 28 candidates nominated, seats are allocated based on the political party representation in Congress. The left-wing Pacto Historico party, led by former President Petro, would secure two seats. Other parties with greater representation, such as the Liberal Party and Salvacion Nacional party, will compete for the remaining seven seats. The candidates include representatives from Liberal, Salvacion Nacional, Conservative, Mira, Centro Democratico, En Marcha, Pacto Historico, Cambio Radical, and La U parties.

The newly elected magistrates will oversee upcoming elections for mayors and governors in October 2027. Additionally, their decisions could impact electoral cycles, as they are responsible for monitoring campaign financing, defining political group statuses, and reimbursing votes.
