Change in mode of support package for Ghanaians returning from South Africa delayed announcement – MTN Board Chairman

MTN Ghana's Dr. Ishmael Yamson revealed that the company delayed announcing a support package for Ghanaians returning from South Africa due to the need to review the initial GHC 10 million plan, which the board deemed inadequate. Dr. Yamson, an economist, suggested increasing the support to GHC 20,000, providing long-term assistance for returnees.

He explained that as a multinational, MTN's finalizing approvals for initiatives often causes delays, though they are close to completing the process. Dr. Yamson also condemned the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa targeting Ghanaians, calling it a "unreserved condemnation" and expressing anger over the acts. He noted that MTN's 120,000+ Ghanian shareholders would be negatively impacted by targeting South African companies in Ghana, emphasizing the company's global shareholder base.
