Buni visits Nigerian refugees in Chad, assesses living conditions

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni journeyed to Lac Province in Chad to meet with Nigerian refugees residing at the Kaya site. Buni commended the peaceful coexistence between the refugees, their host communities, and the Chadian government. He encouraged the refugees to follow the law, refrain from criminal activity, and report any suspicious individuals or infiltration attempts. Buni noted his satisfaction with some refugees engaged in fishing and farming, stating that these activities would bolster their self-reliance.

He assured the refugees that the Nigerian government would continue collaborating with Chadian authorities to support their welfare. Those wishing to return home should engage with the Lake Chad Basin Commission for census purposes, while state governments would facilitate their repatriation to their respective states. Ba Bulama Usman, leader of the refugee community, expressed gratitude for Buni's visit, calling him the first Nigerian government official to visit the camp.

He emphasized that the visit instilled a sense of belonging and hope among the refugees, who would continue to abide by the law and engage in peaceful livelihoods alongside host communities.

Buni conversed with Lac Province Governor Gen. Saleh Hagar Tidjani, thanking the Chadian government for hosting the refugees and maintaining harmonious relations with their communities. Buni stated that Nigeria and Chad would persist in cooperating on peace, security, and enhanced bilateral ties. He reconfirmed the Lake Chad Governors’ Forum's dedication to implementing agreements from their meeting in Maiduguri last year.

Tidjani hailed the visit as an honor, highlighting the commitment of both nations to fostering peace, security, stability, and economic development in the region. Accompanying Buni were key officials such as Lake Chad Basin Commission Executive Secretary Ambassador Ibrahim Babani and Multinational Joint Task Force Force Commander Maj. Gen. S. T. Audu.
