BoG encourages commercial banks to list on GSE

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is urging commercial banks to list their shares on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) as part of measures to bolster the capital market and provide businesses with easier access to long-term financing. Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama stated that a greater presence of banks on the stock exchange would offer them supplementary sources of long-term capital, which can then be utilized for longer-term lending to businesses.

During the 2026 edition of the CEOs Connect organized by the Canada-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (CANCHAM), the Governor emphasized that this initiative would bolster Ghana's financial framework and lessen businesses' dependence on short-term funding. He noted that progress is being made, and if most of the banks are listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, it would result in additional long-term capital being managed.

According to the Governor, increased access to long-term funding could allow banks to provide loans with longer repayment periods, giving businesses the necessary time to establish and grow their operations. "That way, a commercial bank can easily give you a loan for five years or even for ten years," he explained. The Governor further elaborated that a stronger presence of banks in the capital market could expand their access to long-term funding, enhance transparency and governance, and contribute to a more robust financial system.

This call is part of the Bank of Ghana's broader initiatives to deepen Ghana's capital markets and mobilize long-term capital to support productive investment and private sector growth. The Governor also affirmed that the central bank will continue collaborating with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Ghana Stock Exchange to strengthen Ghana's financial architecture. All 23 banks are now fully capitalized, as reported by the BoG Governor.
