Bangladesh has elected veteran politician Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its new President. The election saw Alamgir defeating opposition leader Oli Ahmed by a margin of 255 votes to 88. The BNP's candidate, a long-time critic of the current government, is not expected to bring good news to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Currently in exile in India, Hasina plans to return to Bangladesh in December.
Her return comes after the resignation of her President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, amid political turmoil. Alamgir's presidency could signal a shift in Bangladesh's political landscape and potentially impact relations with India.
