Attacks on Civilians Must Stop Immediately: UN Condemns Russia’s Massive Attack on Kyiv

On August 20, the United Nations Secretary-General vehemently denounced Russia's extensive missile and drone assault on Kyiv, along with attacks on other Ukrainian cities. Stéphane Dujarric, a spokesperson for the UN, stated during a press conference that targeting civilians and civilian structures is a blatant breach of international humanitarian law and must cease immediately, according to UATV English.

The Secretary-General reiterated his demand for immediate de-escalation, leading to a complete, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire, as well as a just and enduring peace, in line with international law, including the UN Charter and pertinent UN resolutions. Tom Fletcher, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, was present in Kyiv on the day of the briefing.

He expressed shock at the aftermath of the latest lethal night for civilians, noting that homes, hospitals, and a school were damaged by Russian airstrikes. He emphasized that reports of additional civilian casualties should incite outrage. Alongside his humanitarian associates, Dujarric announced that the UN provided immediate emergency aid following the assaults on Kyiv and its vicinity.

Earlier, Lithuania's Energy Minister, Lukas Savickas, revealed that during his visit to Kyiv, he and his team spent the night in a shelter as Russia launched a massive assault on the Ukrainian capital.
