Atiku’s fuel subsidy pledge shows serious ignorance of governance, economy — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu criticized the fuel subsidy pledge made by Atiku Abubakar, a presidential candidate from the African Democratic Congress, as a sign of "serious ignorance" of governance and the economy. Tinubu made the remarks during the reception of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja following Adeleke's re-election victory in the recent polls.

He recalled the dire situation of Nigerian states before the removal of the subsidy, with 27 states being unable to pay salaries and pensioners, and workers facing a "half salary" scenario. Tinubu emphasized that the direct beneficiaries of the subsidy reform would be ordinary Nigerians and their families, and the reform was designed to help state and local governments fulfill their obligations and maintain infrastructure.

He urged Adeleke to translate his mandate into effective governance rather than celebrating his electoral win. Tinubu expressed hope that Adeleke would use his position to promote unity, peace, and stability.
