The number of workers changing industries is decreasing despite the pressure for transformation, according to a study by the Institute for Employment and Labor Research (IAB) and LinkedIn. Out of over 32 million LinkedIn profiles analyzed, only 24% of users who started a new job switched to a different industry in June 2026, down from 27% the previous year.

The number of job seekers applying for roles in new industries also dropped slightly from 71% to 70%. This trend is at the lowest point since the research began in 2019, says Enzo Weber, a research leader at IAB.

Weber explains that despite the large change pressures, fewer employees are moving from declining industries to emerging sectors. This lack of dynamism in industry switching is unfavorable as it means skilled workers aren't available for growing sectors, and employees remain in uncertain jobs. However, switching industries also carries risks - one must consider if they enjoy the new field, their suitability for it, and where they could be deployed. Weber advises focusing on one's qualifications and where they are in demand.

If someone fears their job may not be future-proof, they can discuss alternative roles that use their skills with their manager. A job change often seems like a radical shift and retraining, but often existing competencies can form a solid foundation, requiring only additional training. A useful next step is to look beyond one's current industry.

For instance, someone working in administration, organization, or purchasing can often transition to other sectors. Similarly, technical qualifications have a good outlook. For example, someone with an automotive background might consider a career shift to transport or construction. Even tradespeople are in demand across various sectors.
