Apple Music will soon get visible labels for AI-generated content

The music streaming platform Apple Music is set to begin displaying labels indicating the use of AI-generated content, according to recent updates from the company. In March, Apple announced that it would require transparency disclosures for AI-generated artwork, tracks, compositions, and music videos on its platform. Now, the company has provided further details on how these labels will be implemented.

In an email to creators, Apple confirmed that "later this year, we will also make these tags visible to Apple Music users in the form of Made With Al Labels." This move aims to offer users increased transparency regarding the content they listen to, as stated by Apple. Content providers will be obligated to include Al Transparency Tags whenever AI was used to create a significant portion of the content, including tracks generated by an AI platform.

The company defines AI-platform-generated content as any material that is primarily derived from a generative AI service. Apple Music emphasizes that its goal is to provide listeners with as much transparency as possible and directs creators to its Music Style Guide for additional information. The initiative by Apple Music reflects the broader industry trend of addressing the growing presence of AI-generated music.

Spotify has opted to exclude AI-generated music from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default, while Deezer recently announced that fully AI-generated tracks now make up over 50% of its daily new music uploads for the first time. Apple Music's lead Oliver Schusser recently discussed the company's stance on AI-generated music on Billboard's On the Record podcast.

Schusser noted that while more than a third of the music uploaded to Apple Music each month is fully AI-generated, it still accounts for less than 0.5% of listening on the service.
