Anwar to attend 27th Annual Leaders’ Consultation during two‑day working visit to Brunei beginning tomorrow

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to arrive in Brunei tomorrow, beginning a two-day working visit to attend the 27th Annual Leaders’ Consultation (ALC-27) between Malaysia and Brunei. The High Commissioner to Brunei, Datuk Mohd Aini Atan, explained that this annual meeting represents the highest-level bilateral forum for Malaysia and Brunei.

During the consultation, Anwar and Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah will assess the state of bilateral ties and areas of cooperation. Both countries, being close neighbours and ASEAN partners, will also discuss regional and international matters of mutual concern. A Memorandum of Understanding on disaster management collaboration is slated for signing by relevant ministers from both nations.

Accompanying Anwar will be Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. In preparation for ALC-27, Mohamad Hasan will preside over the 27th Malaysia-Brunei Exchange of Letters (EOL-27) Implementation Meeting on August 21, alongside Brunei’s Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Setia Erywan Mohd Yusof.

The purpose of the EOL meeting is to review bilateral cooperation progress and discuss the outcomes of agreements reached by the leaders at the 26th ALC, held in Putrajaya last year. In 2025, total trade between Malaysia and Brunei amounted to RM5.86 billion (US$1.37 billion), with exports to Brunei valued at RM4.20 billion (US$0.98 billion) and imports from Brunei at RM1.66 billion (US$0.39 billion).

As of June 2026, cumulative trade between the two countries reached RM2.38 billion (US$0.6 billion).
