Anwar says Malaysia has adhered to One-China policy since Tun Abdul Razak’s time, will continue to uphold it

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim defended Malaysia's adherence to the One-China policy in response to criticism from Taiwanese lawmakers following his recent remarks on Taiwan. Anwar clarified that Malaysia had maintained the policy since the tenure of the country's second prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

Speaking to local media, Anwar reiterated his stance that the policy would continue to be upheld. "The One China policy has been practiced since Tun Abdul Razak's time. In my view, the policy remains and we will continue to uphold it. Of course, we want to seek a peaceful path whenever possible," he stated. Anwar emphasized that Malaysia's position on the matter was not new, adding that the policy was also accepted by the United Nations.

He defended his position on territorial integrity by drawing a parallel with the United States' stance during its War of Independence to prevent its territories from breaking away. Anwar stressed that while Malaysia respects China's position, a peaceful resolution remains the best course of action. He also attributed the negative reactions to how the issue was framed during his Al Jazeera interview, suggesting that the framing may have prompted the negative responses.
