Anwar: Malaysia’s One China policy has not changed since 1974

Malaysia's stance on the One China policy has remained unchanged since diplomatic relations were established with China in 1974, stated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The policy was adopted during the tenure of the country's second prime minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, and has been upheld by subsequent governments.

Speaking to reporters after a TikTok conference, Anwar emphasized Malaysia's respect for China's position on Taiwan but believed any resolution should be achieved peacefully. He clarified that his comments on Taiwan were in line with Malaysia's consistent policy and the United Nations' recognition of the People's Republic of China as the representative of China.

Anwar acknowledged that the manner in which his recent remarks were framed by Al Jazeera's interview question may have elicited a negative response. He also drew parallels with the United States, noting that it had not permitted its states to disintegrate following the American War of Independence. Malaysia established diplomatic ties with China in 1974, making it one of the earliest Southeast Asian nations to formally recognize Beijing.
