AMA deploys taskforce to clamp down on illegal fare hikes by drivers

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has increased its efforts to combat commercial drivers charging fares beyond the approved rates, especially during peak hours, according to a report from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) taskforce deployment in the Central Business District. The AMA has cautioned drivers, including trotro, taxi, and ride-hailing service providers, against charging fees outside the approved rates to prevent the escalation of food and essential service costs.

The Assembly's Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, expressed concerns during a press conference, urging drivers to adhere strictly to the approved fares. He emphasized that the AMA would intensify monitoring and impose sanctions on drivers found to be charging excessive fees. "We are pleading with them that they should charge the fees that, by the bylaw, they are supposed to charge.

If it is 10 cedis, they should not take 20 cedis just because it is around 4:00 a.m. or during rush hours," Allotey stated. Drivers found violating the approved fare rates will face strict legal consequences, with the AMA deploying additional personnel to enforce compliance. The AMA's initiative aims to safeguard commuters from arbitrary fare hikes and ensure adherence to approved transport fares throughout the metropolis.
