YouTube changes how it counts public video views

YouTube has announced a change to its method of counting public view counts for its videos, aiming to align metrics for creators to assess their videos' performance. The alteration will take effect from August 24, 2026. Under the new system, views will be recorded the instant a video starts playing, from the very first frame. This confirmation was made by a Google employee on a YouTube Help page.

The update is expected to have no impact on creators' earnings or their eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Google acknowledged that it had employed multiple view counting systems across various formats, but creators had expressed a desire for reduced confusion when calculating their exposure. Despite this change, the company's original "Engaged views" metric will still be available, and creator earnings will continue to be based on the "Engaged Shorts views" and "Engaged Watch Hours" metrics.

Google explained that last year it updated how it counted public views for Shorts to better reflect how viewers watch on YouTube. Now, the company is aligning all other video formats to this same standard for consistency across the platform.
