WTC Points Table update after IND vs SL 1st Test: India make gains in Galle win

India's position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings received a slight boost after a convincing win over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle. Resuming their WTC campaign following a disappointing 0-2 series defeat to South Africa in November, Shubman Gill's side secured a rain-disrupted victory on the final day.

Opting to bat first on a slow wicket, Gill's men amassed 462 runs, while Sri Lanka were all out for 284, resulting in a 178-run innings lead. Despite rain interruptions during the first four days, India set a challenging target of 372 runs. Their second innings was concluded in just 50 overs, with Rishabh Pant contributing significantly with a crucial half-century and setting a record as the fastest batter to reach 100 Test sixes.

India's WTC ranking improved marginally from 48.14 to 53.33, marking their fifth victory in 10 Tests this cycle and their first since beating the West Indies in Ahmedabad last year. Currently, India stands fifth in the standings, behind Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, remains in sixth place with their points percentage dropping to 33.33 after their second consecutive loss.

With one Test remaining in the series, India will face New Zealand in two Tests away from home before the conclusion of their cycle, which will be marked by a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia at home next year.
