World’s top-ranked racehorse Ombudsman beaten into 4th in Juddmonte International won by Item

YORK, England (AP) — In a surprising outcome at one of Britain's most prestigious horse races, the world's top-ranked thoroughbred Ombudsman finished fourth behind a 10-1 winner named Item. Ombudsman, a 5-year-old owned by the Godolphin operation from Dubai, had been the 5-6 favorite and struggled to secure a clear run on the rail.

Item, a son of unbeaten great Frankel and a 3-year-old, finally found his space in the 8-horse race, leading only in the final yards of the 1 5/16-mile contest. Trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Colin Keane, Item emerged victorious, securing a first prize of 850,000 pounds ($1.16 million) for his owner, as well as the race sponsor, Juddmonte racing operation of the late Saudi prince, Khalid bin Abdullah Al Saud.

Almaqam, priced at 14-1, secured second place with a winning margin of a head over Ombudsman. Constitution River, the French Derby winner trained by Aidan O'Brien, finished third at 7-4.

The improving Item has won five of his six races, with the sole setback being a ninth-place finish in the Epsom Derby in June during foul weather. He was tied with Hong Kong-based sprinter Ka Ying Rising in the global rankings, which were tied in 20th place with Item and Almaqam.
