With 500-plus structures damaged or lost, B.C.’s fire season is among the worst

More than 500 homes or other structures have been destroyed or damaged by wildfires in British Columbia this year, in a level of devastation comparable to some of the worst recent fire seasons.

This year, wildfires in British Columbia have destroyed or damaged over 500 homes and structures, marking a devastating fire season that compares to some of the worst in recent years. Despite the area burned by more than 1,000 fires – 4,300 square kilometres – being only a fraction of what was destroyed in other years, such as 2023 where a record 29,000 square kilometres burned, the structural losses have been mounting.

For instance, the Bald Range fire has destroyed or damaged approximately 150 properties west of Okanagan Lake, including 40 homes in Summerland and over 100 in other areas. The Bradley Complex, situated at the northern end of Okanagan Lake near Vernon, has destroyed about 230 homes, including 30 homes of band members and 200 non-band homes on the land of the Okanagan Indian Band.

Meanwhile, the Big Bar Complex, affecting about 120 properties outside Clinton, has resulted in potentially hundreds of structures destroyed as the massive 1,600-square-kilometre Pear Lake fire continues to burn out of control. The Brunswick Complex, which posed a threat to the community of Boston Bar, has destroyed seven structures, including four homes or cabins and three other structures, and continues to burn out of control nearly seven weeks after its detection.

The only known fatality this year was an 80-year-old woman who tragically died while evacuating her home in Meadow Valley, west of Summerland, ahead of the Bald Range fire.
