Williams turns to AI to squeeze more from F1 cost cap

Williams turns to AI to squeeze more from F1 cost cap

British Formula One team Williams is utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to maximize efficiency and productivity as the sport's cost cap restricts spending on car design and development. The nine-time constructors' champion has implemented Atlassian's software across its 1,200-strong workforce as part of a broader overhaul under team principal James Vowles.

The initial rollout of the Rovo AI program, which targeted 200 employees, eliminated 863 hours of low-value meetings and boosted work throughput by 83 percent between October and March. Team director of engineering Matt Harman attributed the team's primary constraint to time rather than budget, emphasizing the importance of any efficiency gains.

Harman noted that while AI saved him approximately four hours a week by consolidating project information previously gathered through meetings and manual work, the team remains skeptical about AI making engineering decisions, preferring to maintain human oversight. The team has also improved its fault reporting system by integrating Jira Service Management, which helps quickly address issues reported across its factory and trackside operations.

Atlassian's research indicates that 85 percent of its employees use AI, but only 29 percent have incorporated it into their daily workflows, and only six percent of executives can point to clear ROI from AI.

Your AI governance dashboard is probably lying to you. Mine was too.

This is my first open source project, and it started with an uncomfortable realization about my own setup. I was building it with a coding agent, which writes far more code than I can honestly review.
