Who is ‘Lucky’? Dutch police believe mystery man may have ties to Canada

Amsterdam police have been investigating a mysterious man dubbed "Lucky" since he collapsed on a city street on May 10, 2023. Since putting out an appeal to identify him, they have received over 500 tips. The man, who suffers from aphasia, lost consciousness after experiencing a brain hemorrhage or stroke. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors concluded he had suffered a brain hemorrhage or stroke, leaving him with speech and language impairments.

Lucky had no personal identification on him when he collapsed, making it difficult for investigators to pinpoint his identity. The case is being treated as a social investigation rather than a criminal one. Police are trying to find out who Lucky is and if he has any relatives he could contact. They want to ensure he receives the attention and support he needs, as he often spends time alone.

The Amsterdam-West detective unit initially handled the investigation, but it was later taken over by the cold case team after the detective unit needed to focus on criminal cases. Two former officers led the social investigation, which involved mapping Lucky's contacts and social circles. They determined that he was a member of a Buddhist community in Amsterdam, and that he would sometimes visit a restaurant on Waterlooplein, where some locals referred to him as "Chris the Canadian."

Based on this information, the police released a video to the public, specifically targeting people in Canada, as the man is believed to have an American or Canadian accent. They are urging anyone with information to come forward, as they have received a large number of tips from the public. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) stated that they are aware of the efforts by Dutch authorities to identify the individual with possible Canadian connections and are working with international law enforcement agencies to facilitate the investigation.
