WhatsApp is Adding AI Image Expansion Tool to Quickly Fix Photos

WhatsApp is in the process of developing a new AI-powered photo editing tool that will allow Android users to quickly expand images to the 9:16 format. The tool will use Meta AI to generate additional content around the edges of an image, filling any extra space without cropping out parts of the original photo. This feature is being built as part of WhatsApp's existing drawing editor, allowing users to expand photos within the same editing workflow rather than using another app.

The expansion option will be available from the drawing editor, accessible after opening a photo and scrolling through the filters section. Once selected, Meta AI will analyze the photo and generate an expanded version in the 9:16 format, which users can then share or edit further. The 9:16 aspect ratio is commonly used for vertical, full-screen content and is particularly relevant for WhatsApp Status updates.

When the Status update is shared, square or landscape photos can leave empty space at the top and bottom. WhatsApp's expansion tool aims to solve this issue by adding content around the image instead of cropping parts of it away. The feature is currently being developed for both chats and Status updates, though it may be released for Status updates first.

WhatsApp has not set a public release date for the AI-powered photo expansion feature, but it is expected to be made available to beta testers in a future update. The company has not confirmed which regions will receive the feature when it launches.
