UNVEILED: The trophy that the Springboks and All Blacks are playing for

The Springboks and All Blacks are gearing up for a uniquely competitive tour, with a trophy unlike any other as their ultimate prize. Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry unveiled this innovative trophy, designed to encapsulate the distinct bond between the two historic teams. Created by Strategy Creative of New Zealand in collaboration with both unions, the trophy features a split design, each half representing the national identity of South Africa and New Zealand.

The two halves are magnetically connected, symbolizing the unity and competition that define their historic rivalry.

Should the four-Test series end in a draw, each nation will retain one half of the trophy. The trophy's design is rooted in the blade of grass, a universal element in every player's journey, and is sculpted from two solid aluminium blades, each adorned with artwork celebrating the unique cultural heritage of its respective country.

One blade, designed by Bonolo Chepape, showcases the South African experience, highlighting the collective effort behind sporting greatness. The New Zealand blade, crafted by Kereama Taepa, reflects the Māori narrative of two brothers competing for the same goal, underscoring the tension, respect, and connection inherent in great rivalries.

The trophy's base is made from two contrasting stones, black Pakohe from New Zealand and green Verdite from South Africa, further emphasizing the duality of the competition.

This groundbreaking trophy, publicly unveiled by the captains of the 1996 series, Gary Teichmann and Sean Fitzpatrick, at an official ceremony in Johannesburg, is more than just a prize. It is a testament to the enduring nature of the Springboks and All Blacks' rivalry, spanning over a century. As the teams prepare for their first test match at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, the trophy will take center stage, representing the spirit of competition and respect that has characterized this historic rivalry for generations.
