Trump reportedly plans to tap policy aide Overton to lead FDA

President Donald Trump has appointed White House policy aide Heidi Overton to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), selecting an America First ally to stabilize the agency. Overton, a doctor by training, serves as deputy director of the White House domestic policy council. Her appointment comes after FDA Commissioner Marty Makary resigned in May amid clashes with White House officials over issues such as flavored vapes, the abortion pill, and drug approvals.

The move may deepen concerns among drugmakers and some FDA staff, who are seeking stability after months of upheaval. Chris Meekins, a former Trump health official, believes the choice could accelerate staff departures and reverse progress made since Makary's exit. Overton's nomination must be approved by the U.S. Senate. She has previously worked at the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank.

Overton is known for tackling challenging issues and finding solutions that benefit the country, according to Trump. She will be tasked with rebuilding confidence among industry and public-health groups, as the agency has faced numerous challenges under Trump's administration, including an exodus of experts and top talent, plummeting morale, and lost staff exceeding 3,000 over the past year.

Overton's nomination coincides with new efforts by Trump health officials to address controversial issues like autism and vaccines, as well as the abortion pill.

Overton's appointment has been met with skepticism from pharmaceutical companies and broader healthcare industry, who view her lack of management experience negatively. Industry groups are likely to view her appointment as troublesome, and FDA career staff will continue to depart, according to Meekins. Any progress made since Makary's departure is likely to be quickly reversed if Overton is confirmed.
