Teen Boys Are Using Meta Glasses to Harass and Bully Girls at High Schools and Middle Schools

A TikTok video reveals a teenage girl walking into a large high school, where she encounters an adolescent boy wearing smart glasses. The boy aggressively asks her for her Roblox account, to which she bluntly refuses. The boy continues pestering her, pleading for her other social media accounts. The girl remains uncomfortable and continues walking, while the recording boy follows her.

This scene mirrors the invasive "rizzcam" videos often created by self-proclaimed "pickup artists" and other online creators who use smart glasses to harass women in public spaces. However, in this case, the individuals involved are teenage students.

Many such videos, featuring interactions between students and school staff, have been recorded using Meta's AI Glasses, a product of Meta's partnership with Ray-Ban. These recordings often take place in school hallways, cafeterias, and classrooms, capturing both student-to-student and student-to-teacher interactions. The behavior displayed in these videos is almost always harassment or bullying, frequently filmed without the subjects' consent or knowledge, and subsequently uploaded online to humiliate the victims further.

Strikingly, all of the smart glasses videos reviewed were captured by teenage boys, with the majority of the harassment directed at girls. In some instances, neither the boy's classmates nor teachers were aware that they were being recorded. In other cases, the individuals involved expressed frustration and distress upon discovering the recording, emphasizing their unwillingness to participate.

One teacher commented on the discreet nature of the smart glasses, stating, "These are way more discreet than I thought they would be." This highlights the potential for misuse of this technology in schools, where teachers are attempting to limit electronic devices.

Many of the posts shared by students feature vlog-style videos, such as "Come With Me" or "Day in My Life," showcasing their daily routines at school, hanging out with friends, and sitting in the cafeteria or classrooms. Occasionally, students record themselves interacting with school staff, including teachers, aides, and security personnel. While some adults realize they're being filmed, many do not, leading to an overwhelming majority of these encounters being benign.

However, some students are using Meta glasses to record and post videos of themselves or other students arguing with teachers over grades or other issues. The captions of these videos often reflect the situation, such as "Teacher gets mad!!!" In another clip, a student is seen recording an argument between a classmate and a teacher about taking out notes.

Overall, it is evident that some teenage boys are adopting tactics from viral pickup artists and online pranksters, employing them to harass and bully their peers at school. The majority of this harassment has been directed at teenage girls. As the school year progresses, it is expected that these issues will continue to escalate, warranting increased vigilance from school authorities and parents alike.
