Tanzania: Tz Intensifies Fight to Eliminate Malaria By 2030

Dodoma — Tanzania's government is ramping up its efforts to eradicate malaria by 2030, with a renewed focus on prevention, testing, and treatment measures. Deputy Minister for Health, Florence Samizi, outlined the intensified strategies during a presentation to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and HIV/AIDS. Children under five and pregnant women are identified as the most vulnerable groups, and the government is prioritizing their protection through various interventions.

These include distributing insecticide-treated mosquito nets, conducting indoor residual spraying, and employing biological agents to control mosquito breeding sites. Preventive treatment is being provided to pregnant women in all 184 councils, while children aged five to 16 years in high-burden areas receive similar services. Committee Chairperson, Johannes Lukumay, expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Health's dedication and urged increased investment in resources to accelerate the fight against the disease.

The World Health Organization reports that malaria remains a significant global health issue, with millions of cases and deaths worldwide each year, overwhelmingly affecting sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania, which accounts for a disproportionate share of global malaria deaths.
