Special counsel seeks 10 mln-won fine for ex-President Yoon over perjury

In a bid to seek justice, a special counsel team has requested a 10 million-won fine against former President Yoon Suk Yeol during his appellate trial for perjury allegations, according to news reports. The request was made at the Seoul High Court, following the lower court's acquittal of Yoon in November on similar charges. Yoon testified that he had planned to call a Cabinet meeting for his martial law declaration on December 3, 2024, but prosecutors argue that he only decided to do so based on a suggestion from former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on that same day.

The lower court had acquitted Yoon in May, stating that he appeared to have had plans to convene the meeting regardless of Han's suggestion. The special counsel team is appealing this ruling, seeking a reversal during the trial's final hearing. Yoon is currently serving a life sentence for leading an insurrection following his failed martial law attempt and has since been involved in multiple other trials.
