Seven people, mostly foreign tourists, killed in helicopter crash in Kenya

A helicopter crash in Kenya on Wednesday claimed the lives of seven individuals, including a prominent Ecuadorian spy boss and his wife. The Eurocopter EC130 B4 aircraft veered off course while en route to the Ewaso Nyiro area, reportedly heading to the Loisaba wildlife reserve. The Civil Aviation Authority of Kenya confirmed the tragic incident, which occurred at 9:13 a.m. local time. Video footage from social media depicted the burning wreckage scattered amidst dense forest.

Five of the six passengers lost were United States citizens, according to the US State Department, which is offering consular assistance to the affected families. The US Embassy expressed deep condolences to the victims' loved ones. A Telemundo executive, a US-based Spanish-language TV network owned by Comcast/NBCUniversal, was among the casualties.

Michele Sensi-Contugi, the director of Ecuador's Strategic Intelligence Center, and his wife, a US citizen, were also killed. Sensi-Contugi, a former businessman, had become a trusted friend and associate to Ecuador's right-wing President Daniel Noboa, who appointed him to the country's intelligence agency in 2024.

In light of the growing number of helicopter tours to remote destinations like Mount Ololokwe, Kenya's tourism sector has witnessed an increase in such accidents. A similar incident in February resulted in the deaths of six people, including a parliamentarian.
