Russian ‘Banderol’ Type Drone Strikes Zhytomyr Police Building, Kills 2, Injures 20

A Russian "Banderol"-type drone attacked the Main Directorate of the National Police in Zhytomyr, Ukraine on August 19, resulting in the deaths of two police officers and injuring 20 others. The attack caused a fire on the roof and the fourth floor of the police headquarters building. National Police chief Maksym Tsutskiridze reported on the incident, emphasizing that the assault was a display of Russian aggression, targeting both civilians and those who protect them.

Emergency services responded to the scene, assisting the injured and securing the area. The State Emergency Service (DSNS) later updated the death toll to three and the number of injured to 53. Rescue teams from Cherkasy and Rivne regions joined the efforts to dismantle damaged structures and inspect the site. Ukrainian Red Cross representatives set up aid points to provide assistance to those affected.

Despite repeated air-raid alerts, rescue and emergency operations continued throughout the night. Tsutskiridze expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured, praising the police officers for their dedication and service. Russia has increasingly utilized jet-powered drones and the S8000 "Banderol" drones in their attacks on Ukraine, making them difficult to intercept.

The Conflict Intelligence Team reported that July was particularly deadly, with 634 people killed and 4,590 injured, marking a significant escalation in civilian casualties. The United Nations' Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine also documented the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, with 293 civilians killed and 1,990 injured.

Long-range weapons, drones, and powerful missiles have been the primary cause of civilian casualties, often occurring far from the frontline in urban areas.
